| When drawing lips it is important to think of the values (or shadows) in terms of shapes since that is largely what you are using to draw or define them. | |||||
| A way to see and identify values that is easiest, is to map out blocks of values from dark to light | |||||
| Yellow--darkest
value |
Green--next darkest |
||||
| Blue--medium value |
and Pink --lightest
value |
||||
|
Of course there are far more subtle values to explore. Going for the large masses and then breaking them down into smaller shapes is the best way to go about it. Also blending ( smudging slightly with your fingertip will produce a more realistic mouth . before blending after blending

| Sometimes when the lighting is even, or when women are wearing lipstick it is hard to figure out how to draw the lips without lining them. | |||||
| If you really study the picture you can see where the darkest values are. If you squint, or take your eyes out of focus, you will be able to see the difference in value better. | |||||
| TIP: the corners of the mouth are usually darkest. the bottom lip is usually lighter, and sometimes even has a highlight. Now when you look at these lips, really look at that bottom lip. You can see a slight highlight in the middle. It's subtle but it's there. remember to draw it subtly also. | |||||
| You can also draw the lips by just suggesting them. Just draw in accents to suggest lips. | |||||
| Or you can draw them with your shading. Using the above method for mapping out the shapes of values, then drawing them in. | |||||
