| I drew this portrait in a few quick steps to demonstrate how I approach shading. ( To save time, I'm paying more attention to shading than actual likeness in this one) | |
| First I start out with light strokes. I look for the big blocks of values. I'm using soft, fast, angled strokes at this point. I will cover them up with future layers, so it doesn't really matter what strokes I use now. | |
| At this point I can see that compared to the shadow on the face, the hair is much darker, so I darken the hair up a bit more. Now I go to the darker values on the left side of the face. I try to define the face further by darkening the most obvious values. And then putting in more detailed values. You don't want to overload it with too many at once. You need to remember to take the values as a whole so they don't wind up patchy. | |
